Surah Baqarah is the second chapter of the Holy Quran. It is also the longest Surah, with 286 verses. It comes right after Surah Al-Fatihah, which ends with a prayer asking Allah for guidance. Surah Al-Baqarah answers that prayer by clearly stating that this book is guidance for those who fear Allah.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Recite Surah al-Baqara, for to take recourse to it is a blessing, and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it." (Sahih Muslim 804)
What Does Its Name Mean?
The name Al-Baqarah means “The Cow.” This name comes from a story found in verses 67 to 73, where the Children of Israel were commanded to sacrifice a cow. Instead of obeying directly, they kept asking questions. This story teaches an important lesson about obeying Allah’s commands, even when we do not fully understand them.
When and Where It Was Revealed
It is a Madani Surah. It was revealed in Madinah after Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated from Makkah. Most of the Surah was revealed during the first two years in Madinah, although some verses came later.
Situation in Madinah at That Time
When the Surah was revealed, the Muslim community in Madinah was growing. The Surah also spoke to the Jewish tribes living in Madinah. It reminded them of their history and invited them to accept the truth brought by the Prophet ﷺ.
Main Purpose of Surah Baqarah
The main theme of Surah Al-Baqarah is divine guidance. It calls people to follow Allah’s path. It also explains what happens when someone accepts or rejects the guidance. The Surah describes three types of people:
- True believers who believe in the unseen, pray regularly, give charity, and have firm faith in the Hereafter.
- Disbelievers who openly reject the truth.
- Hypocrites who say they believe but hide bad intentions in their hearts. The Surah explains their signs so people can be careful.
