The Story Behind its Revelation
A delegation of 60 Christians from Najran came to Madinah to debate the Prophet ﷺ about the nature of Isa (AS). Much of the early part of this Surah was revealed in response to that visit. Allah directly addresses their claims, clarifies the true nature of Isa (AS) as a prophet and servant of Allah, and even challenges them to a form of mutual prayer called "Mubahala," where both sides invoke Allah's curse on whoever is lying. The Christians ultimately declined.
