Background of Surah Al-Fath

Surah Al-Fath was revealed in 6 AH while Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the Muslims were returning from Hudaybiyyah. They had travelled towards Makkah intending to perform Umrah but were stopped before entering the city. A treaty was then agreed upon between the Muslims and the Quraysh. Some companions found its terms difficult at the time, especially because they had to return to Madinah without performing Umrah that year. The opening verses then described the agreement as a clear victory.

Treaty of Hudaybiyyah

The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah brought a period of truce between the Muslims and the Quraysh. The Muslims returned to Madinah without entering Makkah for Umrah that year. They were later allowed to return and perform Umrah according to the agreement. Surah Al-Fath explains the event from a different view. Allah described what seemed difficult at the time as a victory.

Sakinah is mentioned more than once in Surah Al-Fath. Verse 4 says that Allah sent Sakinah into the hearts of the believers so their faith would increase. The word refers to peace and reassurance given by Allah during a difficult situation.
