Surah Maryam is named after Maryam (AS), the mother of Isa (AS), and she is the only woman in the entire Quran to have a Surah named after her. But this Surah is not just about her. This Surah has a very special historical moment attached to it. When a group of Muslims migrated to Abyssinia to escape persecution, the Christian king Negus (Najashi) asked them about their faith and about what they believed regarding Isa (AS). The companion Jafar ibn Abi Talib (RA) recited verses from this very surah.

When the king heard the description of Maryam (AS) and Isa (AS), he wept so much that his beard became wet. He then gave the Muslims full protection. This shows the power of this Surah even beyond the Muslim community.
