Surah Quraish

Surah Quraish is a Makki Surah. It was revealed to remind the Quraish tribe of Makkah that everything they had came from Allah. Their wealth, their safety, their respected position in Arabia, and their famous trade routes, and none of it was their own achievement. And in return, Allah asked for only one thing: worship Him alone.

Historical Context

The Quraish had two famous trade journeys every year:

• A winter journey to Yemen
• A summer journey to Syria

These trips were the foundation of their entire economy. They passed through lands of different tribes and dangerous routes, yet nobody touched them. Why? Because they were the custodians of the Kaabah. Every tribe in Arabia respected them because of this.

This Surah points to that reality: that it is all because of the House of Allah in your city. So, the least they could do was worship its Lord.

Many scholars consider these two Surahs to be one complete message. This is why some companions recited them together in a single rakat of prayer.
