Surah Taha

Surah Taha is a Makki Surah, revealed in Makkah during a very difficult time for the early Muslims. The name "Taha" comes from the Arabic letters at the beginning of the Surah. Like several other Surahs, it opens with Huroof al-Muqattaat (letters whose full meaning only Allah knows).

The heart of this Surah is the story of Musa (AS), told in more detail here than almost anywhere else in the Quran. This story was chosen to speak directly to the Prophet ﷺ and the believers to show that Allah did not abandon Musa, and He will not abandon you either.

The Story of Umar (RA) and Surah Taha

Umar (RA) was one of the strongest opponents of Islam before he became Muslim. One day, he left his house with the intention of killing the Prophet ﷺ (we seek refuge in Allah). On the way, he found out his sister and her husband had accepted Islam.

He went to their house in anger and heard them reciting something. He forced his way in, hit his brother-in-law, and then asked to see what they were reading. His sister handed him the pages of Surah Taha. He read the opening verses. And something changed in him completely. He went straight to the Prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam.

(Sirah Ibn Hisham, Volume 1 and Al-Bidaya wa'l-Nihaya)

Main Topics of Surah Taha

A Verse on the Quran Itself

Allah says, "We have not sent the Quran down to you to cause you distress." This verse was directly comforting the Prophet ﷺ, who used to pray so long at night that his feet would swell.

Allah Speaks to Musa (AS) Directly

Musa (AS) was traveling with his family when he saw a fire. He went toward it, and Allah spoke to him directly, and he was given prophethood and miracles. Musa (AS) became Kaleem Ullah (one who spoke to Allah) after this event.

Musa (AS) asks for Help

Before going to Firawn, Musa (AS) made a famous dua. He also asked Allah to give him his brother Harun (AS) as a helper (a prophet).

Musa (AS) Faces Firawn

Allah told Musa (AS) and Harun (AS) to go to Firawn and speak to him gently, even though Firawn was the most arrogant tyrant of his time.

The Magicians Who Became Believers

Firawn gathered his best magicians to defeat Musa (AS) publicly. They threw their ropes and staffs, which appeared as snakes. Musa (AS) threw his staff, and it swallowed everything. Right there, the magicians recognized the truth, fell into prostration, and became believers, even though Firawn threatened to kill them.

The Golden Calf

While Musa (AS) was away receiving the Torah, a man named Samiri misled the Israelites into worshipping a golden calf. People followed Samiri blindly, even though Harun (AS) tried to stop them.

Adam (AS) and Human Nature

The word Nasiya means he forgot. It is used for Adam (AS), who forgot Allah's command and ate from the forbidden tree. According to some scholars, humans are called Insan from the root word of forgetting.

The Dua of Musa (AS)

Before facing Firawn, Musa (AS) made a dua saying, "My Lord! Open for me my chest; ease my task for me; and untie the knot from my tongue, that they may understand my speech" (Surah Taha, 25-28)

Muslims recite this dua before difficult tasks, exams, public speaking, or any moment that feels overwhelming. You can use Surah Taha PDF for easy memorization.
