أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ أَخْبَرَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُ قَدِمَ رَكْبٌ مِنْ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ،‏‏‏‏ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ:‏‏‏‏ أَمِّرِ الْقَعْقَاعَ بْنَ مَعْبَدٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ:‏‏‏‏ بَلْ أَمِّرِ الْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ،‏‏‏‏ فَتَمَارَيَا حَتَّى ارْتَفَعَتْ أَصْوَاتُهُمَا،‏‏‏‏ فَنَزَلَتْ فِي ذَلِكَ:‏‏‏‏ يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيِ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ حَتَّى انْقَضَتِ الْآيَةُ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ صَبَرُوا حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ إِلَيْهِمْ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ سورة الحجرات آية 1 - 5 .

Abdullah bin Az-Zubair narrated that: A group from Banu Tamim came to the Prophet [SAW]. Abu Bakr said: Appoint Al-Qa'qa' bin Ma'bad (as commander or governor), and 'Umar said: No, (appoint) Al-Aqra' bin Habis. They argued until they began to raise their voices, then the words were revealed: O you who believe! Make not (a decision) in advance before Allah and His Messenger... until the end of the Verse: And if they had patience till you could come out to them, it would have been better for them.
