Who Makes Up the Community Srinagar

Ramadan 2026 Srinagar is heavily influenced by the city's unique geography, cold climate, Sufi traditions, and "Kashmiriyat" (Kashmiri culture). Srinagar is a Muslim-majority city, with around 96% of the population identifying as Muslim. Most people are ethnic Kashmiris. You’ll also see a few Pashtun-origin families and nomadic Gujjar-Bakarwal. Most people follow Sunni Islam (Hanafi). Sufi influence is also b, and shrines matter a lot here. There is also a large Shia community, mainly in Zadibal and Hassanabad.

Traditions of Sahar Khan and Khoon-Khabar

One thing that truly defines Ramadan here is the Sahar Khan. Even today, when everyone has phones, these men walk through the narrow, cold lanes of Downtown Srinagar (Sher-e-Khas) around 2 or 3 AM. They beat a drum and call out “Waqt-e-Sahar,” waking people for Sehri time Srinagar.

Another old tradition is the Khoon-Khabar. For decades, a cannon fire or loud siren from Hari Parbat (Koh-e-Maran) fort marked the start and end of the fast.

Shrines Over Mosques

Ramadan in Srinagar revolves more around shrines (Ziyarats). Hazratbal Shrine, on the banks of Dal Lake, becomes extremely crowded, especially on Fridays. At Khanqah-e-Moula, people gather after prayers for Aurad-e-Fathiya, a special Kashmiri congregational prayer.

Sehri, Iftar, and Kandur Smell

Sehri here feels incomplete without Noon Chai, the pink salty tea. It’s usually taken with Girda or Lavas (traditional breads) and fresh bread from the local Kandur. At Iftar, almost every home has Babribyol, a drink made from basil seeds soaked in milk, with coconut, rose, or saffron.

For Iftar time Srinagar, Kandurs (bakeries) also make Sheermal (sweetish bread) and Bakarkhani. In the last ten days, many homes serve phirni or halwa cooked in desi ghee along with dates.

Quiet Days and Soft Nights

During daytime in Ramadan, most restaurants and shops stay closed till Iftar. What you hear instead are Aurad-e-Fathiya and Kashmiri Naats (poetry in praise of the Prophet ) playing from mosque loudspeakers. The tune is slow and emotional, very different from other cities.

After Iftar and Tarawih, people step out around Lal Chowk and Dal Lake, but not for long. Markets close earlier because of the cold nights and the general security situation.
