How Saudi Arabia Sets the Current Hijri Date?

Saudi Arabia follows the Umm Al-Qura Calendar as its official Hijri calendar. Its calculations use Makkah as the reference point, including the coordinates of the Kaaba when determining Hijri month dates. Official moon-sighting decisions also matter when the beginning of religious months needs confirmation. This gives people checking the Islamic date today in Saudi Arabia a Saudi date reference rather than one taken from another country.

Why the 29th Day Matters?

A Hijri month has either 29 or 30 days. The evening of the 29th day matters because the next Islamic month might begin after it.

Two outcomes are possible:

If an accepted crescent sighting confirms the new month, the next month begins.
If the crescent is not confirmed, the current month is of 30 days.

Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court receives crescent-sighting reports when an official decision is required.

Why the Islamic Day Begins in the Evening?

In Islamic tradition, a new religious day begins at sunset rather than midnight. This matters for worship and religious occasions tied to a Hijri date. An observance linked with the next Islamic day begins from the evening before the corresponding daytime period. Understanding this difference also helps readers make sense of the Islamic date today when checking religious dates around sunset.

Why Saudi Arabia and Other Countries May Show Different Dates?

A new Islamic month does not always begin on the same day in every country. Crescent visibility differs by location, while countries also follow different calendar methods and moon-sighting authorities. A new month announced in Saudi Arabia does not automatically set the local Hijri date elsewhere. The difference is not fixed. Saudi Arabia and another country might share the same date for much of a month and differ when the next month begins.
